 MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Health Committee is to be and make disciples of Jesus Christ through developing and promoting health, healing and wholeness.

We seek to integrate body, mind, and spirit through education, support, and prayer within the church and greater community.

SERVING BRINGS HAPPINESS

Albert Schweitzer once said, “One thing I know, the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who will have sought and found how to serve."

If you would like to volunteer to help the Health and Wellness Committee, contact the church office.

38 Social Security disease added to Compassionate Allowances

Today, Michael J. Astrue, Commissioner of Social Security, announced that the agency will add 38 new conditions to its current list of Compassionate Allowances.  This is the first expansion since the original list of 50 conditions (25 rare diseases and 25 cancers) was announced in October 2008.  Details of the announcement are discussed in our press release.

The Compassionate Allowance initiative is designed to quickly identify diseases and other medical conditions that clearly meet Social Security’s standards for disability benefits.  In developing the expanded list of conditions, Social Security held public hearings and worked closely with the National Institutes of Health, the Alzheimer’s Association, the National Organization for Rare Disorders, and other groups.

Commissioner Astrue said, “The expansion we are announcing today means tens of thousands of Americans with devastating disabilities will now get approved for benefits in a matter of days rather than months and years.”

Prevention is the Key.  Consider these things that you can do in five minutes throughout the day.

  • Brush your teeth. Brush twice a day and floss your teeth daily
  • Wash your hands.  This is the best way to prevent infections.
  • Take some deep breaths.  Relieve anxiety and stress with deep, abdominal breathing.
  • Schedule regular checkups.  Schedule annual physical exams and dental checkups.
  • Pack your lunch.  Fresh fruits and vegetables, whole-wheat breads, lean meat sandwiches.
  • Apply sunscreen.  Use a sunscreen of at least 15.  Apply regularly.
  • Get moving. Take steps to get physically active.   Build as much walking into your day as possible.  To keep motivated, wear a pedometer and set a goal of walking 5,000 or 10,000 steps a day.
